Hangama Zohra is a famous Afghan pop singer. Born in 1962 in Kabul, Hangama's stage name was chosen by the singer's mother when she decided to pursue a career in music. Little is known about her upbringing until she collaborated with Ahmad Wali in the 1970's. The duo became immensely popular in Afghanistan, and even in neighboring Iran and Tajikistan. Hangama is known for singing pop-styled songs as well as ghazals. She left Afghanistan during the Soviet occupation in 1985, and fled to Germany. It was there that she and Ahmad Wali decided to wed. The couple had one child, Massieh Wali, and soon after divorced. In the past decade, Hangama has held concerts with other Afghan singers such as Valy and Najim Nawabi. She is thought to have made a lasting contribution to Afghan music. Hangama currently resides in Toronto, Canada, and continues writing music and performing.
