Dr. Zalmai Rassoul is an Afghan politician who was born in Kabul in 1943. He graduated from Lycée Esteqlal, and went to Paris on a scholarship to study medicine. He is a Pashtun and has been working several different jobs in the government since the time of King Mohammad Zahir, including Security Advisor from 2002 onwards, and Minister of Foreign Affairs from 2010 to 2013. He ran in the 2014 Presidential Elections and lost, however, he was a favorite of many, as the leading technocrat in the race. Rassoul has over 30 publications in medical journals around the world, and is a member of the American Society of Nephorology. He speaks Farsi, French, English and Italian. He is not married and has no children. This was one of the things he was critized for during the 2014 Elections.
