Tanai was a former member of the PDPA (Afghan Communist Party), and served as minister of defense from 1988 to 1990 under Dr. Najibullah. Tanai, with Gulbuddin Hekmatyar’s support, revolted against Dr. Najibullah’s government in 1990. Tanai at one time also worked with the Taliban movement. He is currently living in Afghanistan, and heading the political party called Afghanistan Peace Movement (Da Afghanistan Da Solay Ghorzang Gond).
