Hafizullah Amin was a prominent member of the Khalq faction of the PDPA, and eventually, after ousting Noor Mohammad Taraki, became the president of the Democratic Republic of of Afghanistan in September 1979. Amin worked diligently to recruit numerous students to his party before becoming president. He was also responsible for the assassination of thousands of people. Many historians believe that Amin was really an independent nationalist, despite his Soviet connections. The Soviet Union, realizing this, assassinated him, and his followers, during the invasion of Afghanistan. He was born in 1929 and had a Masters degree from Columbia University in New York (USA).
