Jalaluddin Rumi Balkh is known as the greatest Sufi poet in the Persian language, He was born in Balkh (Northern Afghanistan) in 1207. His family moved west to avoid the Mongolian Invasions, which brought mass destruction and chaos. During his life time, he wrote a great deal of lyrical poetry, including the famous Mathnawi, which focused on the various aspects of Sufism and their relationships with everyday life. J. R. Balkhi’s works are widely read and have been translated into many languages, including English, Spanish, French, Spanish, Italian, and even Russian. Balkhi was also the founder of the Whirling Dervishes (Mawlawiyah Order). He died in 1273 at Konya.
