August 26, 2011: Cricket in Helmand Province

A discussion with the Helmand Regional Cricket Board Manager, Mohammad Tahir Abshar.

By Noor Ahmad Noori

Twenty-five year old Mohammad Tahir Abshar, who was born is Lashkar Gar city (capital of Helmand province), is the Helmand Regional Cricket Board Manager. I sat with him recently at his office in Helmand to discuss the status of cricket in Helmand province.

Mr. Abshar grew up in Quetta, Pakistan. When the Taliban regime fell in 2001, he came back to Lashkar Gah city with his family, and went back to school there. He graduated from the 12th grade from the Lashkar Gah Boys High School. Mr. Abshar has 14 years of experience in the sport of cricket. In early 2010, he was a cricket manager, but when a cricket board was established in Lashkar Gah, he became the manager of the board.

Mr. Abshar said that there are currently 14 adult men’s cricket teams in Lashkar Gah, and 3 youth teams (ages 6-14). I asked him about any girls’ teams, and he said that because of the current situation, there currently are no girls’ cricket teams, but they are working towards making them.

According to Mr. Abshar, the cricket team from the province travels to other provinces to play against teams from different provinces. They have been to Kandahar, Kabul and Jalalabad. In fact, he mentioned that in 2010, his team played against a team from Ghor province in Jalalabad and defeated them.

Mr. Abshar said that the development of cricket in the province is going well. They are lots of spectators and that two of the teams have even been sponsored by local traders.

Mr. Abshar also mentioned that they lack an adequate playing field and that they have requested the governor for land. For now, his team practices in a football field.

I also got a chance to speak to some local cricket fans. They are happy to see local cricket games in Lashkar Gah. Twenty-one year old Ahmadullah, who resides in Lashkar Gah, said that he has attended the games and that he really enjoys them. Twenty-three year old Samiullah, a local cricket player, told me, “I really enjoy playing cricket. I practice it every day, now we just need a proper cricket field in Lashkar Gah”.

Afghanistan won the toss and chose to bat first. They made a decent start and kept a steady pressure, Noor Ali Zadran even scored a half-century.  Unfortunately, it was not enough to win the game. Overall, the Afghan team scored 274 runs, the highest scorers were Noor Ali Zadran with 51, Karim Sadiq (not out) with 42, and Mirwais Ashraf and Shabir Noori scored 31 runs each.  The Pakistan A team scored a total of 278 runs.

Many Afghan fans were disappointed with the 3-0 shut out of the national cricket by a second string Pakistani team. Many believe that despite their outstanding successes in such a short amount of time, their performance against the Pakistan A team clearly shows they are not ready yet to take on the big names of the sport such as India and South Africa. Despite this, Nawroz Mangal, the captain of Afghanistan’s team, remains hopeful, and described the tour as “useful”.  “It was disappointing to lose from a position of strength in the last match,” he told AFP. “Overall it was a tour which has taught us many lessons and with more and more exposure against the top teams we will improve.”

January 27, 2011: Big disappointment for Afghan MMA fighter

Fans of Afghan Mixed Martial Arts (MMA) fighter and Shooto Light Heavyweight World Champion, Siyar Bahadurzada, were excited to hear that he had been signed by a major Mixed Martial Arts organization (Strikeforce) in April 2010. Unfortunately, it turns that this is not the case. Bahadurzada announced on his Twitter and Facebook account that Strikeforce had actually never signed the contract that he as well as his Golden Glory management had been promised.

This is a major disappointment for both Bahadurzada and his growing number of fans worldwide. Apparently, Bahadurzada even turned down an offer from Bellator Fighting Championships, another major MMA organization, because he thought he had a deal with Strikeforce.

Bahadurzada told MMAValor.com that the reason Strikeforce gave for not signing the contract was because of the money. Fans and MMA media were also shocked at the fact that Golden Glory management had not been aware that the contract was not actually signed by Strikeforce. MMAValor.com wrote today that “Strikeforce appears to have been quite unresponsive and maybe even deceiving to the fighter and his management.”

Bahadurzada, quite understandably, is very upset and may be making some rash statements. He even said the he is willing to fight the winner of this Saturday’s Strikeforce welterweight championship match between Nick Diaz and Evangelista Santos for free! He said, “I will fight the winner for free in Strikeforce and if I lose I will retire from MMA. I want you to understand I love MMA, it is the only thing I have in my life that I love so understand how serious I am when I make this challenge to a bunch of clowns… If Strikeforce accepts, I guarantee you I will knock out their champion.”

His fans are however urging him not to put everything on the line for a single fight, and his fans are still hopeful that Bahadurzada will get to fight for a major MMA organization, perhaps even Dana White’s Ultimate Fighting Championship (UFC).
